First Year
Home Up

A note of late September 2026. After many years of not looking at what I originally had on this page I am attempting a huge edit. Original Maple worksheets no longer function properly because they were created using Maple V. I once had here on this page 'First year introductory talk on Maple 1995 (the very first time I used Maple with my students), 1996, 1997, 1998'. I have removed the first three of those, and the final one I managed to convert to html format (see below). I have now finished editing this page.

Maple introduction October 1998 (html format).

Sept 2000 (html format), material presented at an 'Advisory session' with prospective first year students, September 2000.

Introduction to inequalities (html format), Sept/Oct 2000. Here not everything exported from the original, but I have retained it nevertheless.

Chess solution (html format), a solution/discussion of the chess board problem presented in Introduction to inequalities.

Archimedes area (html format), work to illustrate how Archimedes found the area of a parabolic sector (this work forms - in my view - an excellent path into a study of infinite series. It is, of course, of interest in its own right.) A related worksheet - the one I used to create the fixed diagrams in the Archimedes area worksheet is:

Archimedes diagrams (html format).

Infinite series (html format).

Visible Structures. The creation of that worksheer was motivated by the December 2001 MAA Monthly artice by Peter Borwein and Loki Jörgenson, Visible Structures in Number Theory.

Swineshead's sum, illustrates Oresme's graphical derivation of the sum of what I call Swineshead's series. See this Wikipedia page about Swineshead, and this page on Oresme (it was Oresme who first established the divergence of the harmonic series).

I will have many more in-term worksheets to add here when time allows. (Ah, a vain hope at one time...)
